Limkokwing signs research MoU on new technology

Limkokwing University of Creative Technology has teamed up with
Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) to undertake joint research into
new technologies.
The two educational institutions recently signed a memorandum of
understanding (MoU) which also involves the other six Limkokwing
universities worldwide.
They will collaborate to develop Augmented Reality (AR) technology
that uses computer-generated data for real-world applications in
industry, education, entertainment, military and emergency services.
Augmented Reality is described by Wikipedia as a live view in which
the information layer lies atop the real-world scene, thus creating a
mixed reality.
Currently, AR technology exists in real-time, like sports scores on the television screen during matches.
It is also interactive and digitally usable, as used in automobile GPS systems.
Unimas semantic technology and augmented reality director Dr Edmund
Ng Giap Weng explained how this technology would benefit the education
industry.
“Augmented reality aims to transform the physical paper book students
normally use in classrooms into a book that can be viewed in a
holographic way.”
Students are able to browse through pop ups, thus perusing information just as if they were reading the book.
“This technology will also support the film and television industry,”
said Limkokwing University president Prof Emeritus Tan Sri Dr Lim Kok
Wing.
With both universities having separate areas of expertise, Unimas
will supply the technical know-how to create a market for multimedia
products.
“Unimas is the only university in Malaysia which has great knowledge
in the field of artificial intelligence. We currently have artificial
intelligence departments in three different faculties,” said Unimas
vice-chancellor Prof Dr Khairuddin Ab Hamid.
On the other hand, Limkokwing University will undertake consumer
research, content creation and develop consumer applications, working
towards getting final end products on shelves, he added.
